Engagement Sessions 101
What’s an engagement session?
Engagement sessions are where we take photos of a couple to announce their intent to marry, capturing photos that celebrate their relationship (and look great on "save the date" cards!). A lot of clients are confused about why engagement sessions are something a couple might want to do. That's totally understandable! We aren't all as chained to our post offices as we used to be. Facebook notifications, Instagram pics, a quick Snapchat or even a group text are easy ways to announce that you and your partner are tying the knot. We understand that for busy, adventurous couples there isn't always a ton of time to spare. And we know that the budget might not have a lot of wiggle room either. But there's a lot of great reasons to have an engagement session you might not have considered…
Why should I have an engagement session?
An easy answer is that it's fun! We have a great time with couples when we shoot engagement photos. It's important for you to feel comfortable, so we keep it relaxed. We strive to just hang out with you and capture moments of you and your loved one naturally so that you have pictures that you feel reflect your relationship. But we also know that not everyone's idea of fun is playing the supermodel in front of a camera for an afternoon! An engagement session isn't just about taking photos for announcements, though. It's a chance for you to connect with your photographers and give us a chance to get to know you! We want to know who you are, your tastes and what you're passionate about so that on your wedding day we know exactly what you want us to capture. Whether that means close-up details of an heirloom veil from a beloved grandmother, the flower girl dancing barefoot in the grass, or one of the quiet moments unique to you and your partner, we want to be sure we don't miss a thing! Because we're wedding sidekicks, we don't just want to show up as spectators to your wedding. We want to be involved and helpful to you in any way you need. We understand that those needs are unique to you and your special day. The better we know you, the better we can anticipate what you want and need in your wedding photos, and not just stick to a standardized shot list that's impersonal and overdone. You wouldn't invite a complete stranger to your wedding, and we don't want to be strangers--we want to be the sidekicks you can trust in the adventure that is your wedding day.
But what do I wear?!
This is our most frequently asked question, hands down! But the answer is actually pretty simple: wear what's authentic to you. Your engagement photos should reflect you and your partner as you are because who you are is who your partner fell in love with. Now isn't the time to break out the three-piece-suits if you're more of a "jeans and a t-shirt" person. We've done engagement photoshoots in evening gowns, without makeup knee-deep in the surf, with flannel shirts and flip-flops and everything in between. All of them have turned out awesome and true to personalities of the couples involved. Remember, this is a photo session because of your engagement. It's all about the choice to be with someone you love for the rest of your shared lives! We think that deserves celebrating, and celebrating the people you are that brought you to one another.
